Feeding Frenzy is a weekly round-up of reading, listening, or watching that is worth your time. These posts will act as a weekly boost of signal above the noise that you can chew on over the week!

This podcast is what I think of as Tim squared (yes, I laughed to myself as I wrote this). I've spent time reading much of Tim Urban's writing on Wait But Why and to hear him talk about his process is very interesting. When you read his blogs, it has a polish to it, but it's approachable. One of the topics covered in this podcast is how to teach anything. If we are on a scale of 1 - 10, the average person is about 2 or 3. Urban focuses on getting to a 5 or 6. That we can explain most of the facts and what the big arguments are on the topic. What differentiates an excellent communicator is the ability to make a complex topic understood by as many people as possible without losing the quality. We've all experienced this. Maybe a math teacher that is trying to explain an equation to you for the first time, and it was not getting through. You start drool out of the corner of your mouth because you've reached your limit. It might be that the teacher has had too much exposure to the topic (back to the scale 7 - 9) that they can't effectively remember what it's like to be a beginner again.

'The question is whether there will remain a solid middle class, which in this metaphor almost completely refers to the class of independent creators. How will they fare? How will their business positions be maintained? Who will support them? And will we see a future in which podcasting is broken up into different paywalled platforms, not unlike what we're seeing with the streaming wars?'

I find this fascinating. I didn't know much about the world of audio and podcasting until about three years ago. I had initially started with the TED Radio Hour (A new group of recommendations to dig back into!) and a few odd podcasts that were more produced like the Hidden Brain (also NPR). But it wasn't until I came across long-form audio interviews by the likes of Joe Rogan and Tim Ferriss. I've been hooked since there's something magical about audio. There's a connection you can get with the guest and interviewer, unlike any other media.

Aside from what podcasts make me feel, I spend time thinking where they are going. Well, the above quote poses many questions that I fit into nicely. I see podcasts as a democratized platform that allows us to share and allow ideas to compete with each other freely. Each conversation that is posted is one that is valuable for me. Still, then anyone listening can listen to and internalize lessons to be gained from them. Nothing happens in a vacuum, and open discourse of complex ideas allows us to try and understand rather than oversimplify them.

'Finally, using a cleverly designed video game, the researchers showed that their six-fingered subjects could perform tasks with one hand that most people would need both hands to achieve. Together, these findings suggest that the brain is not hardwired for five fingers but could foreseeably represent as many digits as might appear on a body.'

This article is fascinating! A general theme that could be extracted here is we can look for the outliers (good or bad) by trying to understand them as deeply as possible allows us to tease out more general understanding. More specific to the article is that the brain may not have a limit to what it could adapt too! You may want to read that again. In some ways, this may be intuitive because, as we so much more technology than our ancestors, yet we still have the same brains that they did.

Josh Waitzkin is a hidden gem in the performance world. In this short video, it has so much to unpack. What I find fun is looking at Josh's body language as he responds to each question. Much of the time, he takes a faraway look and looking off to the right as he starts to answer. As usual, I was first exposed to Josh on his episodes with Tim Ferriss. If you're like me, it's very much worth your time, and while you're at it, check out The Art of Learning. Well, here's a four-minute video that also adds a podcast and book recommendation.

Henry David Thoreau: 'Happiness is like a butterfly: the more you chase it, the more it will evade you, but if you notice the other things around you, it will gently come and sit on your shoulder.'

This week is a wrap and plenty to chew over for this week! Feel free to let us know any thoughts and suggestions that may contribute to these posts. It may pop-up on Feeding Frenzy or develop into a full-fledged post of its own.

Stay curious, and have a great week!
